It’s A Brain Game – Raising The Awareness Of Encephalitis
It’s a Brain Game, is the brain child of Ian Powell. After learning about Ian’s battle with Encephalitis, the team at GroundWOW® just wanted to get involved. Our collective initiative is to raise awareness of Encephalitis. Starting with 100+ games of racket related sports in February from squash, racket ball, tennis and the ever growing popularity game called Padel. The It’s A Brain Game team will be taking part in a range of games throughout the year for The Encephalitis Society.
So what is ENCEPHALITIS?
Encephalitis is an inflammation of the brain. It is caused by an infection invading the brain (infectious encephalitis) or through the immune system attacking the brain in error (post-infectious or autoimmune encephalitis). It’s an uncommon but very serious condition and anyone, at any age, can be affected. Over 500,000 people globally are affected by the infection and it is growing fast as a direct result of climate change. Encephalitis can be life threatening, and even the people who are luckily enough to spot the symptoms early can sometimes result in life changing disabilities, both physically and mentally.
Our aim is to raise £7,800 throughout the year with the figure representing the 78% of people across the world who have never heard of Encephalitis. Contact us to get involved and watch this space to see what games we’ll conquer next…
Meet Ian Powell
I’ve been a volunteer for The Encephalitis Society for several years now following my own scary diagnosis with the condition in 2017. I’ve had an amazing and humbling experience helping others less fortunate than myself who have severe brain damage.
It’s for that reason, I’m doing this charity event to raise money particularly for the Young Persons Weekend, which is a life affirming experience for everyone involved.
I aim to play as many people as possible at a racket sport in February 2023, with a minimum target of 100 games!
Please, if you can, get involved and donate, your contribution will make a massive difference to many people who are living with the legacy of Encephalitis. My target is to raise £1,500 for this amazing charity but with the support of others and the team at GroundWOW® our overall goal is to hit the £7,800 in 2023. So let the games begin!
